Grizz using oil
#1
I have a 2006 Grizzly 660 that I bought new in April 2006. Up until this fall, it hasn't burned any oil. The oil always stayed full. But starting this fall I would take it out for a weekend and then I would have to add oil, about 1/4 qt. When it's running, it doesn't blow blue smoke. It's not leaking anywhere either. I've only done routine maintenance (oil changes, lube, clean air filter, etc) but I've never had the valves adjusted. Any suggestions on what could be causing the oil loss?

what doctorturbo said. did you check/add oil while running or shortly after? have you done a filter change recently?
sometimes if you change the filter and add oil, then run it you will find you are down on oil a bit, like 1/4Qt or less. because the oilfilter sucked some up and is retaining it. or if the mechine was just running the oil is still up in the head/cooler/ect. and not down in the pan

When I checked the oil, it had been sitting for a couple of weeks without running and it was sitting on a level surface. The last oil change I did was May '08 and I've maybe put on 500 miles since. I think I'll do an oil change this weekend and check the oil level after it's sat for a few hours. I do change the filter every time I change oil.

Make sure you don't be a dummy like me... Doh!
I changed the oil and would check the level by screwing in the dipstick to check the oil level (This is how it is done on Honda XR250 dirtbikes..) the correct way to check it is to insert the dipstick into the filler hole (WITHOUT SCREWING IT IN) then remove it to check the oil level..
I found that I had to put in about 1/4-1/3 quart or oil.... I will NEVER make that mistake again!
Also - depending on how much off-camber riding you do... oil does find it's way up into the airbox... I get about 1-2 tablespoons worth when I ride up / down steep terrain and when I and riding off-camber.
