Rancher 400 AT lots of questions
#1
Hi. I just boiught a used 2006 Rancher AT. I did alot of searching and found alot of
varying answers, some that were, directly opposite of others. I would like to get
some info from someone that has real direct experience with this machine. Oil for
starters: Does the machine have 1 or 2 drain holes? It does take the same oil for
the trans as the engine correct? Does it matter which side you fill it from? What is
the correct part# oil filter? Transmission: Does the AT have an angle sensor, like
the other models? I cant seem to locate one on the front of the motor. Is there
any clutch adjustments that need to be made? Sometimes when in automatic my tranny
wont upshift, it just hangs and makes the quad stop like the brakes are on, then
you let off and come to a stop, then you can hear an electric motor sound, then it
works again. Any help with any of these questions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I'm not super familiar with the 400 AT and don't have a manual handy, but will give you a bump anyway.
Yeah, it uses the same oil for the engine and transmission. I think it only has 1 drain hole. I'd get the genuine Honda filter from the dealer, and they should get you the correct one. If it is the same one as on the Foreman (I think it is) be sure you insert it the correct way. Putting it in backwards will block all oil flow and ruin the engine. Honda filters are stamped as to which side goes towards engine, and which side towards cover. I believe it also has an angle sensor...

The engine has 1 drain plug...

Yes same oil for engine & transmission ..
Does it matter which side you fill it from?
There is 1 fill hole and 1 dipstick ..
What is the correct part# oil filter?
Oil filter # is 15412-KEA-003 it is the large filter that will install either way (don't loose the spring seat which usually sticks to the filter)
Transmission: Does the AT have an angle sensor, like the other models? I cant seem to locate one on the front of the motor.
Yes it has an angle sensor , it is on the left side just above the footrest ..
Is there any clutch adjustments that need to be made?
No the 400FG/FA doesn't use a manual clutch , only a centrifugal clutch ..
Sometimes when in automatic my tranny wont upshift, it just hangs and makes the quad stop like the brakes are on, then
you let off and come to a stop, then you can hear an electric motor sound, then it
works again.
Honda had a replacement ECM that they thought would fix that problem (especially worse on 2004 models) but the main problem was/is the centrifugal clutch
gets glazed and slips a little then the ECM sees the RPM going up and it adjusts the swash plates to a higher gear .. Then you have to come to an almost complete stop
before it downshifts again ..
Any help with any of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! I searched around on th enet some and found that a honda mechanic had posted a recalibration sequence for the transmission on another forum. I did that to mine, and then the auto worked correctly, till I shut my machine down, then when I restarted it, instead of bogging down, it felt like it wanst in gear at all, then you would let off the throttle, then it would grab and go. I really dont care to use the automatic setting anyway, I just want to make sure the machine will be reliable if I just use the ESP setting. Is there any danger of the whole transmission going out if I just use ESP, and is the ESP system basically a regular manual shift/centri clutch, setup just with an electric motor to shift it for you? One last question, a salesman at the local Honda shop said that there is a $1600 pump in the transmission that goes out on these. Is that true, or was he trying to get me to trade up? Does anyone have a blowup picture of the transmission, or know where I can get one? Im very mechanically inclined, Im just not familliar with quads very much, and definitly not familliar with the AT. Thanks!
