You know the large bolt under the the muffler,is that for cleaning it out or what? I tried to get it of once but it does not budge. Our 97 Sportsman with 7000 miles also never had it off, but Polaris must of put it there for a reason?

Yep, it's for cleaning out residue. Mine was extremely difficult to remove, but it did come out. Rev the enginge while lightly tapping the muffler with the wrench to kick out the carbon residue. I have 800 hours on my machine and very little residue came out.

If you do get it to come out, put some anti seize stuff on it before you re install it.

When I got my quad we had to clean out the muffler of carbon deposits that were plugging it up,we got it but decided to cut the sides of the muffler and put a piece of sheet metal that we could remove when we needed to clean out the muffler.

TLC,

I bought my '01 back in September of last year, and I pulled it off just for ease of mind. My machine had about 1200 mi/200 hr at the time, and I'm the 3rd owner. I just had a hunch it had never been done before, and the manual says it needs to be done every 100 hrs to clean out carbon deposits. I sprayed some good penetrating oil on it heavily, let it sit over night, and the bolt came right out easily. Nothing at all came out of it though, even after I revved it and tapped on the muffler housing with a hammer. I seriously doubt it should be done every 100 hrs unless maybe heavy water/mud up to the muffer usage. It did make it a good bit louder tho!!
