Got a new battery that had the poles reversed and hooked it up backwards. Got a puff of smoke from under the front, also a sizzle noise. Put in correct battery and had no power to switch. put a volt meter between battery and neg. cable and was reading 12.84 volts, same as battery. does this mean I have a dead short? When i disconnected the ecm it drops to 12.06 volts, when I unplugged the speedo it stayed at 12.84 until i unplugged the ecm then it dropped to zero. does this mean the ecm is bad or both ecm amd speedo? I can not find any burnt wiring or sign of damage anywhere, although ecm smells burnt. How can I tell what is really bad without just buying parts? By the way the 04 1/2 had the first ecm that had the circuit breakers built in with the regulator and temp control box that is called the SSCB on the wiring diagram or ecm or logic box in the manual. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. JT

if you have no power going to the switch, then the speedo wouldnt be working. did you try to see if theres a fuseable link in the line from the battery up through? usually when you hook up a battery backwards something for sure is going to get fryed. maybe someone w/ a 500 manual could take a look in thie rbook to see if theres a way to test the ecm. if you had a dead short it would be draining the battery voltage rather quickly. imo.

I had the same problem about two years ago. Did the same thing with the new battery.
I have been trying to reply for a week and a half but the site is still acting funny for me. Am I supposed to down load something or get a new browser. Any one else still having problems with slow loading of the site.
Anyways, I did fry the ECM. big plume of smoke and smelled it right to the source.
The ECM cost just about $130.00. Easy swap and the bike fired right up. Didn't seem to do any other damage.
Let us know how you made out with this. I'm sure you and I aren't the only ones to have done the same thing.
Good luck,
Deerkiller
