I know what you mean about the pipe that looks rusty but isn't. That happened to my warrior which has the same exhaust as the wolverine, it's like the pipe has been powder coated and baked with dust and mud.
I stripped mine down to bare metal and sprayed it with high temp paint, and for the most part it worked, but it tended to flake off on the highest temperature areas no matter what I did. The paint I used is supposed to be good to 1,000 degrees fahrenheit, maybe if you find something that could handle more heat you'd have better luck.

i used black grill paint on my son's yz80 exhaust and it is holding up great. a very small motor to compare to, but the paint looks great. it is flat black and it also made the old charcoal smoker look like new too.

I used krylon bbq & stove paint, flat black, 1200 deg. thermo-guard protection,
I havent ran it alot since painting the exhaust but seems to be fine, this is on my
350 warrior. if there is a specialty autoparts store around you that deals with such things as race cars/hot rods they may have some hedder paint, I have seen some as high as 1800 deg. maybe google high temp paint and see what is out there.

Just finished painting my exhaust today.I used BBQ paint, went on like a semi-gloss
but after running awhile it turned flat.I never had any luck with high temp paint ,always burnt right off. This looks like it's going to last alright.
