I have an '07 700 raptor with a K&N filter, Monster Duals, and a Powercommander. I am using the pre-loaded map from TQS, has always seemed OK. So, today I installed my Koso EGT, and the results are alarming. The EGT went up to over 1400F at idle. Now, I expected catastrophic failure around 1300F, so over 1400 seems like it would be total devastation. I pulled the plug and it's black, , not sooty, but black, , no signs of aluminum though. My thoughts are: is it possible I'm getting a bad reading? As the EGT went up 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, , the idle never wavered one bit either way. I would expect that if it was eating itself up, the idle would have been effected one way or another.
Now, one of the reasons I put an EGT on is because I ride right at sea level and often when it is below freezing or even below zero. The last time I rode, I noticed a bit of glow in the pipes, but it was super dark at the time, I didn't think much of it.
Any ideas of how to tell if it is leaning out of not? any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Jay. I never thought of fuel burning in the pipe raising the temp, , I was guessing a lean condition. The plug isn't sooty, but it is black. I don know the machine NEVER overheated when I rode, the fan didn't come on much, even in the summer. It did come on occasionally, , but it wasn't constantly on.
