Help buying new atv
#1
Hey guys (or girls) id like to buy a new atv but I cant figure out wich one would be a better fit for me. Im a kind of guy that like to go fast but not all the time, I have a cottage where I can use it a lot on roads and on big large trails. It is my first sport ATV but I dont want a ATV that after 5 rides I will want a new and faster ATV. I herd that he 400ex would be good but I dont really like the style of the ATV I like it more like the suzuki ltr-400 or something like that. I also saw the polaris predator that I really liked and that wasnt to expensive. I will be riding with my friend that has a honda 450r so I dont really want to make him stop to wait for me because my ATV cant follow him either. I would like to know wich ATV would be good for me if I like speed but not all the times I want to be able to do nice little rides too. Thank you for your help

If the trails at your cottage are big and large, I would consider an MX style ATV, one that is 50 inches wide, just because it will be stable and it should fit fine.
The Suzuki LTR 450, Can Am DS450X MX and Yamaha YFZ 450R are all good choices - they are all 50 inches wide and have EFI. The YFZ and the LTR are basically the same machine, some of the Yamaha fanboys on this forum seem to believe that the YFZ 450R is some AMAZING machine, but when you compare the specs they are really the same. The LTR has been on the market since 06, and originally there were a few problems with the 06's, but after 06 there have been no problems (some early 08s had a weak 3rd gear, but it was fixed very early in the year). There are a TON of parts available for it already. If you take off the spark arrestor and the airbox lid and add a $30 Yoshimura Cherry Bomb (a plug in thing) then you get a 7HP increase. Stock, the LTR will be slightly faster than the 450R, but with the Cherry Bomb, you will be able to easily smoke your friend.

A Z400 or a 400EX are great trail quads! The EX lugs down so it is better for the really tight more technical stuff, and the Z is better for faster open trails and wide open country.
I don't like any of the 450's for trail riding. They are all rev, and like to be ridden fast out in the open.....

But he says that he has big large trails, so why would he need a 400? A 400 is best for tighter trails, not open ones. His friend rides a 450R no problem, so I don't think he should go with a 400.
I would say a big-bore would probably be best in this case.... so look for a Can Am/ Bombardier DS650 or a Raptor 660... you should be able to find both in your price range, check your local craigslist.

He has limited funds. A used 450 is most likely all used up...and going to be badly in need of a rebuild. A used 400 on the other hand, will probably have another 5 years left in it.
And just becasue his friend rides a 450 doesn't say much. Maybe his friend doesn't know squat?
And one note...the DS650 is a big tank, and the Raptor 660 is tippy! Avoid both!
A Z400 is probably perfect for your mixed conditions!
