I am looking at getting a bit more power out of my 2002 Sportsman 400. What can i put into it that i can install myself and not to much money? Can you get a chip or something for it? Im looking for anything at all here. Suggestions please.

 

Clutch kit and a pipe. You'll lose some top end clutching it but the low end torque you gain is well worth it. Not a big fan of chipping but other listers may have more feedback on that.

 

I have a 2006 Polaris sportsman 450 and I was told to put a K&N air filter on it and run AMS OIL. they also said to put a new fuel filter and sparkplug i would put the NGK Iridium IX Spark Plugs. i would also put mudlite tires on your ATV. They make a big difference. i wouldnt go and larger than a 25 tire.

 

Ya i was thinking about the K&N filter, but wasnt sure how much of a difference that would make. But im guessing that it does work? And a pipe would be nice also, i just need to find where i can get one. I already put on some mud bug tires which helped out so much, i can go through anything now. The stock tires would just dig down till u were hung up, these dig and dig no matter what.

I have a 2000 SP500 and run stock except for NGK Iridium plug, K&N air filter, Mobil 1 oil and oil filter, 25" ITP Mudlite XTRs. The air filter is really a no-brainer in that it's pretty cheap, plus you no longer have to buy a new filter every time you do a tune up. Was there a lot of performance difference? No, not really.

I wouldn't go with larger tires on anything less than a 700cc quad (26" maybe, but certainly not 27"s). I stuck with 25"s and am happy I did. It would be a different story for the newer quads that are geared to run 26"s OEM. 25 --> 27 on a 400c motor with gearing for 25's is bad news... unless you're willing to upgrade the gearing/trans too.

I haven't done a pipe simply because 1) they're expensive 2) I doubt I'd see $200-300 in performance 3) to do it right, the carb probably should be re-jetted 4) the MI DNR can be a PITA on decibel levels.

Maybe look at a NOS kit?

 

The 2002 have no ECM brain box so the chip thing is out of the picture. Pipe and clutch kit is the norm.
