2004 speedometer question?
#1
Does the speedometer effect the 4X4 operation of the 2004 Sportsman 500s? I know it does on the older 500s (00 - 03) prior to the body/4x4 system change (no more hillard clutch hubs). I am considering purchasing one with 158 hours of time with the only known problem being the broken speedometer. Does anyone know the comon causes for speedometer failure?

After 1999 all the speedos went digital were and Incorporated with the AWD system for some crazy reason. You can have a speedo quit just because its $50 "Hall Effect" wheel sensor failed but the speedo is fine and will still work the AWD.
If the AWD works then its just the senor you need not the speedo, the senor is easy to change.
The speedo is needed for the older external hub twin Hillards and new internal single front diff Hillard models.

if the speedo dont show the speed. it will most likly be the hall sensor. but if the speedo dont work at all the 4x4 system wont work either. all the wheel hall sensors are the same from 00 and up sportsmans. you can test it if you have basic electronic knowlage. but i know the hall sensor has givin false speed readings. at slow speeds it will say your going faster than you really are and you will know it.

This makes sence because the person selling the machine said everything but the odoometer and the speedo work. Anyone have a part number for a Hall Sensor?
Thanks for the detailed information.

i beleave this is the number- 4010298Sensor it would eassy to see if the awd is effected by putting it in reverse in awd and push the yellow override in and quickly back up to see if just the back wheels spin. beware if it needs a new speedo thier fairly expensive i do beleave. just a heads up.

I think they did that so they could incorporate a AWD speed for engagement safety feature,or a feature to minimize damage. ie..the AWD will not initially engage above x MPH or X engine RPM. I'd bet with a little electrical knowledge and wiring diagram you could bypass that, might be good to know how in a pinch.

Yes there is a bypass method for people who want AWD but do not want to replace the $300 speedo.
All Polaris 4wd have the same AWD system yet some modles have no speedo in the first place like a 4wd scrambler, xpress, xplorer, magnum and so on.

Thanks gentlemen. I was looking online at the same parts diagram and did not know which part went bad 32 or 33. Luckily this machine has everything else (tach, hour meter, 4WD) in working order.
