Default scrambler ordeal

hello i am new to the polaris posts. I have been the proud owner of a 2001 400 scrambler. it has been a reliable, and suprisingly quick bike up until today. i was riding it home from a friends house and it seems to bog and lose power about a mile from my house. it barely got me home limping at 10 mph, i shut it off and then cranked it and it cranked way too easy like it has lost compression. do you fellow polaris owners have any advise as to what to do now? i am fairly mechanical and have rebuilt 2-strokes before but not this particular one. what would you fellas do? do you think i would be fine with just a top-end rebuild?

First, put a compression tester in the plug hole to see if compression was lost

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

First thing is to do a compression check. If I was betting I would say a piston broke in it.
