Default baja 50cc no spark

Hello,

I have a 2006 Baja 50cc which is basically a yamaha raptor 50 clone w/ the 50cc generic honda knockoff engine w/ electric start and CVT.

It initially ran terrible until I tuned the carb and then it ran great. It has a remote kill and a tether kill (bypassed). Both of those worked fine.
My middle child was riding it and it just died like the remote was pressed.
It hasn't had spark again. I swapped the CDI w/ another chinese bike that was a known good one and the other bike ran with this quad's CDI but the quad has no spark.

I am pretty sure it's either the feed signal to the CDI or the remote kill unit is bad, but wiring schematics aren't my specialty. I was hoping someone out there has experience with any of these clones and this problem.

I am about to strip it down and swap the engine out (almost cheaper than paying a shop) with a bigger 110 or something

What happens if you just unplug the remote box? The quad should still start and run, but if I remember correctly you then can't turn off the engine with the ignition switch - you have to use the handle bar kill switch to stop the engine.

You said the tether kill switch has been bypassed. That is a strange choice of words. It implies you made wiring changes. To disable the tether kill switch you simply unplug it, or cut the wires, etc. Unplugging a connector doesn't sound like "bypass" to me, but maybe I'm misunderstanding your post. In any case I want to make sure you didn't connect those tether switch wires together because that will *kill* the spark.

How many connectors are on your CDI? One or two? How many pins are on each connector?

Do you have a voltmeter, and are you willing to use it? For some reason I've found that many otherwise intelligent people would rather stick screwdrivers in their eyes than pick up a voltmeter. A voltmeter is a powerful troubleshooting tool.

In order for the CDI work you need a power source for the CDI, a timing trigger signal, and you need to *not* have the kill pin grounded.

You probably have four kill switches, any one of which can cause no spark. They are: One pole of the ignition switch, a handle bar kill switch, the tether kill switch, and the remote control box. The power source is most likely a high voltage AC winding on the stator. Some newer quads have 12 VDC powered CDI's. The trigger signal is used to tell the CDI when to fire, and comes from a winding on the stator. All of this stuff can be easily measured/analyzed for proper operation with a voltmeter.

Stuff on the output side of the CDI (the coil and spark plug and some problems within the CDI) are more easily troubleshot by swapping in new parts since they can't be completely measured without special equipment. [There are some simple things you can measure like primary and secondary winding continuity]. You're fortunate since you have another quad to swap parts between.

First thing is to measure the kill switch pin on the CDI to make sure it is not grounded. I need to know which CDI you have, then I can tell you which pin to measure.
