86 TRX250 4 wheeler not sparking
#1
Hi guys, new member here. I have an 86 TRX250 shaft driven four wheeler, which I picked up dirt cheap at a garage sale.
The problem we seem to have is getting spark. We found a blown fuse in the two fusible links in the front of the machine, we had spark and briefly had it running. We took a small break and when we went back spark was gone. Fuses are fine, connections were cleaned, but what I'm in fear of is we may have blown out the CDI box using a battery charger to jump start the machine. Does anyone know how to test it? I've checked the coil, I had one that I knew for sure was good (pulled it from a running CH150 scooter) and still nothing.
Any help how to test these things that could cause sudden loss of spark would be great! Thanks!

I know a few things about CDI's but not everything.
1. Yes, there's a high probability that charging without unhooking the battery, or jumping can fry the CDI.
2. There is no way to check if a CDI is good. It's process of elimination. If everything else checks good, then the CDI is bad.
3. New CDI's are expensive. Check Ebay for a used one.

Well I put a spare CDI in that I had on hand today, and still nothing. I've also changed out the coil (I happen to have several spare coils for just about anything Honda) and I don't know where to turn next.
I thought about pulling the side cover and checking out the flywheel, stator and pickup - is that a dry or wet setup?

voltage regulator?

Anyone know how to test the voltage regluator? I've got one, but one plug is *slightly* different but wires are the same. I'd like to know before I change the plug for it to work.
This does sound possible, because we were using a 200 amp battery charger in jump start mode to crank it over.

Broke down and bought a test meter and pretty sure I got this narrowed down now. Seems to be a bad pickup coil.
That just happens all of a sudden like that, eh? Checked resistance and it's wide open, nothing.
Or, at least, The ATC250SX book says to probe between blue/yellow and green/white at CDI box connector, problem is, there isn't a green and white.
The CDI I have on my TRX is from an ATC and all the wires matched, etc so where might the green/white wire be?

By the way, if anyone knows where I can get a specific free manual download for the TRX250SX let me know. I found the one for the ATC250SX, but there's another box right next to the CDI that looks like a CDI and I want to know WTF it is and what it does.
Thanks!
Thanks!

What is the bike ..?.. Honda made the TRX200SX and TRX250 and TRX250X ...? ..
If it is shaft drive it is a TRX250 ..

The CDI tests are not accurate unless tested with a Sanwa SP10D or SP15D
