Default timing chain tensioner on 1999 timberwolf 250

i just bought a '99 timberwolf 250 and the guy i bought if from told me the timing chain tensioner had a crack in it. i checked and it definitely does and needs replacing. my question is is this a hard job. i can turn wrenches but don't have alot of mechanical experience. any help would be appreciated.

you will have to set it at TDC then take the cam gear off and pull the head off in order to be able to take the tensioner out and replace it, is it the one that the adjuster pushes against or the one on the other side? its a pretty in depth job i guess you will need a side cover gasket, head gasket, maybe some yamalube and of course the new tensioner, i would check the other tensioner also to make sure its not worn while your there, maybe replace the chain it might be stretched a lil bit.

Default Thanks

It's the tensioner that bolts outside the case with 2 8mm bolts. So your saying I need to go inside to release it. Also I'm not sure what TDC means. Guess I will probably need a mechanic.

unboolt the tensioner from the jug and pull the whole thing out.. you don't have to release it from the inside.. just pull the top timing chain cover( aka cam access cover) and make sure you chain does not come off when you loosen it. No need to take jug off.

oh your talking about the little cam chain slack tensioner that sits on the side of the jug, i thought you were talking about the timing chain guides, yea taking the cam chain tensioner off is an easy job whenever you install it back in make sure you push the little rod back in flush, it will then extend outward automatically to put the right amount of tension on the timing chain when its ben installed.
