88 TRX300 Carb ? - Revs and Bogs
#1
Hi,
My name is Jason and I live near Stillwater, Oklahoma.
To make a long story short, I recently purchased an 88 TRX300 FW. Since it had been sitting a while, the carburetor obviously needed attention. I am by no means a mechanic, but I did take it apart and clean it to the best of my ability using a carb cleaner. But apparently, it still needs some attention.
The atv start very easy, but even though the idle adjustment is completely backed out, the motor soon begins to rev as if it is being given maybe 1/3 throttle. However, if you do actually attempt to give it throttle, it dies almost immediately.
I have now taken this carb apart several times to clean it and examine it, but now I am at my wits end. I guess my next step will be to either buy a working replacement carb, or pay to have this rebuilt. However, before doing this, I wanted to make sure that there is not something simple that I am overlooking.
Can you help?
Additional info: After my first attempt to clean the carb, I could actually get the motor to run fairly decent by choking the air intake by covering it with a thin, tight knit rag ( We actually used it quite a bit this way.). However, this trick no longer seems affective.
Thank you very much for you time!

You can disregard this post. For after posting I took the carb apart again. I decided I would recheck the main jet (I gave it so much attention the first time I cleaned the carb that I didn't even consider it as a possible source of trouble.). When I did, I found that it was clogged again. Apparently I left just enough dirt that that needle shoved it back into the jet.
Thanks anyway,
Jason

Well after putting things back together, I found that the thing revs good when given throttle (no more dying out). However, the idling is still messed up.
At first it will idle decent, but if you rev up, it will not come all the way back down, it revs at a fast rpm. However, as soon as I back off the idle adjustment even a hair, that slight adjustment brings it back down to its normal idle. Something is definitely still out of whack. Any Thoughts? (I checked to make sure that the throttle is not getting bound up.
By the way, what is the adjustment screw on the outside of the carb, just below the throttle? It could be out of adjustment. But what is it and could this have anything to do with my problem?
Thanks for your help,
EDIT: After messing with it again, I found that you don't have to throttle it up to get it to rev, but it will simple begin to rev on its own. And just the same it will go back down on it's own. If you leave it running you can slowly listen to it go up and down.
