Default 1988 Trail Boss - PVT cover hole

This is a 1988 Trail Boss 250 2x4.

I just got a hole in the top of the cover of the PVT.

Looks like it was made from the inside. I am going to take this apart today and have a look.

Question 1: Is this a common problem ?

Only way I can see to fix the hole is get a new cover (and make sure that whatever is causing the problem is fixed, of course).

Question 2: Until I get the new cover, is it sufficient to seal the hole temporarily, eg. with duct tape, or is there some consideration I am missing ?

Thanks for any answers/advice.

just needs to be water tight. find out of the belt is starting to shred of if a bolt is loose causing it to hit the clutch. if it were me i would put jbweld on it and call it good.

Thanks for the advice.

Finally got the cover off (the old bolts were b**ch to get off; I finally had to cut the heads of 3 of them), and determined that it is not the belt but the clutch (the hole is outboard on the cover, over the clutch).

Not sure how that happened (my guess is I inadvertently leaned on the cover the time I got into a steeper than intended angle while negotiating a gully), but I am planning to do just what you suggest: patch the hole and learn the lesson.
