2002 Sportsman 700 Sticky Shifter
#1
I am having a problem shifting my 700. Sometimes, you can't get it out of gear without killing the engine. For instance, today, I started down a hill in high range. I decided to pull it into low, pressed the brake and had to yank pretty hard to get it out of high. The result of this was I was now in reverse. I fought and fought with it trying to get it out of reverse and into low but I just kept creeping backwards. I finally killed the engine, shifted to low and continued my ride. Later down the trail, once I had gotten to the bottom of the hill, I pressed the brake, shifted to high without issue and went on about my day.
Any Ideas? Could it be a spring issue on the belt drive system? Fluid issue in the transmission? I do have a little slack in the shifter but I don't think that is the problem. I replaced the shifter mount blocks this morning before I rode. This is took alot of slack out of the shift linkage. There is a little slack in the ball joints on the shifter rod but it really feels more like it is something deeper inside the machine, because it doesn't jump out of gear and once shut the engine off, it shifts smoothly between gears.

Same thing happens to mine all the time, check ur belt alignment(controlled by the lower engine mount)(slides left to right) and make sure it is directly lined up. Does it want to creep at idle? If so your clutches are out of alignment very bad, mine is getting bad but not enough to worry bout it(its gettin hard to shift but not creeping yet). But like I said its not a serious problem(usually). The other thing, if its even the slightest bit tight to shift with the engine off setting still, ur shifter mecinism (where your bell crank goes into the side of the tranny) could be dry. Take it apart and grease every part and then fill it up with lithium grease and itll take care of it, just make sure you remember how each gear goes(they can go 2 ways), I forgot how mine went when i took mine apart and it took me bout 2 hours to get it right again. (if you do this, just a side note that I ran into: the shaft that your arm {that your shifter rod hooks to} is supposed to be 2 seperate pieces [mine was rusted and seized together])

Chech to make sure the front motor mount is not broken, if its ok then it sounds like the primary clutch needs new ebs washers, you need special tools to get the clutch off and to get it apart, I spent like $300 on the tools, may want to take it to dealer, get it fixed before it gets too bad cause the cost will go up if its real bad.

Thanks for the input guys.
I took the bell crank off and sprayed down the shifter gears with CRC white lithium grease.
Then I pulled the belt cover and everything looked fine except for a fine black film that I didn't notice until it was on my hands.
I took the belt off and hosed down the clutches with brake clean, blew everything out real well, started the engine and reved to sling any left over brake clean out, installed a new belt and put the wheeler back together.
Only had time to ride a couple of miles but had zero issues. Stopped and went from high to low. No problems. Tried everything I could to make it lock it self up annd never could make it act up. Seems like I may have gotten lucky and got out cheap.
Thanks again for the input.
