Used quads and sand
#1
Hello all,
I am looking at some used quads on Craigslist and have a question. I've decided I want a Honda 400 sport quad - probably 2002 or newer. I have one buddy who cautions me against buying anything that has been used in the sand. I'd like to hear your opinions on this one. Is a 5-7 year old machine much more likely to be well worn under this kind of use? Would you buy one?
Also, any tips for inspecting a used machine are welcome. I am probably looking to spend $2200 to $2800 out here in California, as that seems to be the going rate for a 2002 to 2006 vintage machine.
Thanks.
Doug

I go sand dune riding all the time. I can't see why a quad that has been ridden in sand would be any different than any other use. If it has been owned by someone that maintains it and doesn't beat the crap out of it then it should be ok, whether it was used in sand, mud, dirt, or whatever. If it has been thrashed with no maintenance done, then it is going to be trouble, irregardless of where it has been ridden.

I'll second what DV said. There's a lot more things that can wrong with one that's been dunked in mud and water than just sand. How it's taken care of will make the difference on how it will last.

I don't know where this "sand" thing got started? I know guys who have 20 year old Banshees that get duned every weekend in the cool months. You couldn't tell them from ones that have been out bashing rocks for 20 years out on the trail....if it weren't for the paddle tires and the whale pipes.
