Default 500 ho polaris clutch grooved ???

Hi I'm trying to help a buddy ,he has a 2007 500 HO polaris..400 miles. the clutch is engaging harshly @ a high RPM I think he said 6000rpms. He took the cover off and found the clutch has a groove wore in the outer plate where the belt rides. He also says you can see the clutch moving up and down on the shaft? Does any of this make sense or sound familiar to anyone else?

well the groove is very common, but doesn't seem to cause problems. In my experience.
the high engagement is most likely being caused by something else

he has grooves like in the clutch w/ only that many miles he either really burned a belt and or idled for an extremly long times. check to make sure the weights arent worn out as well and the spring isnt broke. i would take the belt off and them remove the cover(center bolt and the 6 bolts) and see if the spring is good then check the weights for grooves out of them and make sure they move freely.

Should put it in neutral when idling that way the belt spins with the clutch and you are less likley to wear a groove in there.

However, how do you fix a groove? can those be lathed? Or are you better off just replacing it? And do you really need to?

just replace it. not really anything to fix and it would be very expensive vs buying a new sheeve.
