Default 2003 fourtrax 350 shifting problems

i just bought a 2003 fourtrax 350 4x4 with 2990 kms on it...this unit is as clean and minty as i have ever seen...
now....the only problem with it is this...
when i shift between the gears i cant shift up unless the engine reaches a certain rpm...
is this normal??
i try to shift and i cant move the pedal at all....like its jammed...but when the engine is at a higher rev then i can shift...it feels kind of awkward...
is the clutch out of adjustment or is this normal???its especially hard to shift between first and second...this is a manual shift model...
Dan.......

Pick up a service manual and try adjusting the clutch. I am not sure if that particular model has a hydraulic clutch or manual but check all the lines, cables, connections, etc. Could just be something as simple as a worn clevis if it has a manual/cable clutch.

i talked to a couple of honda techs this morning and they dont seem to think that it would be a clutch adjustment problem...
one seems to think that it just might be something sticking in the clutch mechanism....
he says i should change the oil and take it for a good run up and down the gears to see if this loosens it up...
this quad has been sitting for a while...like ridden very little in the last year...
the oil is clean...does it really need to be changed?
does annyone think this information makes sense??

There was a recall on some early models on a plate (can't remember the exact name) in the transmission. Perhaps your needed one but never got it????

As for an oil change...it never hurts to change oil! Oil will go acid when it sits, so this is a good idea!

See these posts as well for important oil and maintenance advice:

Where the shift pedal won't move at all it really doesn't sound like the clutch adjustment but that's the easiest first step to try ... If that doesn't help then you will have to remove the clutch cover..

i adjusted the clutch and it seems to be allot better than it was...
i know the manual says back off the screw 1/4 turn but what if its backed out say 2/3 rds of a turn will that hurt annything?
i was thinking worse case scenario if the screw is in too far the clutch would slip in gear???
i have it at about 2/3rds of a turn and it seems good...
