Default ds650 charging system, grounds are good!!!

i'm working on a ds650 for a friend, it kills batteries. Got a fresh, fully charged battery, cleaned grounds and subframe connection, and installed a extra ground cable from the frame to the engine....no dice

Still not charging, all I get is bat voltage @12.8v, drops to 11v with lights on and reved up a bit.

I checked red wire at reg/rec and get 12v switch off, black wire from reg/rec to neg bat post checks good.

anybody have procedure to check the charging system and reg/rec? I don't want to buy a manual because it isn't my bike!

are these things known to eat reg/rec or stators?

Thanks

You didn't mention the year but the reg/rec does go out from time to time. You should have 12v +/- a few tenths sitting. When starting you should drop no lower than 9v, after running you should be reading 14.25v. If not the Rectifier needs replaced. They are very affordable on ebay.
I'm running one right now that I picked up on ebay about four years ago for $15 including S&H. I put lots of hours and hard miles on my bikes and the auction Regulator has held up well.
Keep us posted.

I agree, It is probably the regulator/rectifier assembly. I bought a new one for around $50, shipped..

ok, did some more testing,

I get 20-30+ volts a/c at the yellow wires at the plug at the voltage reg/rec when running depending on rpm , and I get bat. voltage at the red wire, and black wire has cont. to the ground wire at bat.

so I'm thinking the reg. is bad, anybody got a good cheap one?
