Default 2001 rubi hondamatic troubleshooting

I just bought a 2001 rubicon for $500 that is said to have a bad transmission, a Victory motorcycle tech started to tare down the atv but quit before he actually got to the hondamatic. I was wondering what i should look for in a bad unit and if I end up replacing the hondamatic do I have to replace the entire oil pump assembly of just certain parts of the oil pump.

I'm also thinking about trying to fabricated the failed part in the hondamatic if is a gear or shaft of some sort. I'm a 3D Designer/CNC Programmer so I can make most anything.

Thanks for the help.

What was the transmission doing ..? .. What do you mean he quit before he got to the hydrostatic unit ..? .. We change the oil pump as an assembly ..
