Default 2001 ds650 quit running out of nowhere

a couple days ago i was out at a gravel pit not rippin but just puttin in and i went up the hill didnt romp on it or anything and as soon as i got to the top and started to go back down again it shut off.

i checked the gas and on off switch.. it has spark and fuel i did a compression test and it read zero..

cam chain snap?

it turns over fine. i dont hear clunking.

oh and it will backfire every once in awhile

but it was odd it went right up the hill no problem and then died

I doubt the cam chain snapped, but it could have jumped.. pull the spark plug & take a look at it.. see if there is any melted aluminum on it.

i did there was just carbon build up. and i thought about the chain jumping but would it really throw it off so much to give it zero compression?

ill pull the case and take a look. its just been cold and snowing here.

i hope everything it okay. this thing is my baby and my freedom

if the cam chain jumps, it allows a valve to be open when its not supposed to, & lets the compression escape through the open valve...

so i took it apart.. the cam chain is tight and all looks well... i cleaned the plugs, still has spark... its gettin fuel. i pulled the air filter and covered the opening with my hand and it has a lot of suction..

it did back fire! a fireball flew out of the carb when i had the throttle wide open and cranking it over..

i dont see any possible way the cam jumped its too nice and set up. no slack anywhere.

my guess is its firing at the wrong time.. but how?

maybe the head gasket blew?

Default Valves

Could be an intake valve out of adjustment. Valve is not going closed all the way so when it fires the flame follows the fuel straight up the intake.

I would check the flywheel to see if the key sheered off and the flywheel moved out of time

I doubt its the cam chain. Are you sure you did the compression test right? Try doing a leak down test, that will tell you more. If you think its a timing or firing issue, try a different CDI. If its the original CDI from 2001, it could just be shot. Did you take the cylinder off? Are the rings ok? Might have broke a ring, but that would be a worst case scenario.

well i took the case off. no metal shards and the cams are still lined up... i havent taken the cylinder off. i can put this in here tho 'the carb has intense suction and it will shoot fire with the throttle wide open... so if it has spark i know the cdi isnt totally shot. maybe the sprag clutch? i dont wanna rip this all apart on my porch if its something simple. im going to pick up a better compression test kit tonight
