High Lifters NEW Detroit Locker...
#1
It was on the main page of this site...The Locker and UN-Locker...I think they are for full-time 4wd ATV's only.
I bet you Honda guys will love this to lock your Foremans and ect. I don't know if it's just for Foremans, or just for Hondas or what...does anyone know more about this Locker and UN-Locker??

You are actually only half right. The Highlifter website only describes the UN-locker, which allows full time 4WD quads to be converted into 2WD/4WD switchable units. This will be a mechanical system that will be cable actuated. It will have a sleeve that will slide to lock or unlock two splined shafts that seperate the front differential from the output shaft of the transmission. The first model it will be released for is the Honda Foreman 450S/450ES as they had the most requests for that model. Rubicon models will follow a few months later. Cost is expected to be around $400. Now to let you in on a secret (not really a big one, though) they are working with the same company that makes Detroit Lockers for Jeeps and trucks to develop a "gearless locking differential" This will be similar in concept to the Visco-lock differential used by Bombardier in the Traxter, which is regarded as the best system in the ATV market (yes Polaris owners, better than your On Demand system too)! The actual system will be different and the gist of it is that it will allow for different wheel speeds between the two front wheels as long as the ground is causing the speed difference, as in turning, which will allow easy steering. The differential will not allow wheel speeds to differ from the input speed from the transmission, which will prevent loss of power to either front wheel. The net effect, if the product is as good as it claims, is that the differential will provide true 4WD power like a locker, but without the steering and handling compromises that a locker requires.

Shumidt, You mean this would be the cats meow for us Y2K 4X4 Kodiak owners too! I ask this question on the Polaris and Yahama post about this new Detroit Locker if it would be a fluid type or mechanical engagement or disegagement. I think you answer my questions.

I think this locker has a few people confused, I believe that many people think this un-locker is going to unlock the front wheels from each other when it is not going to. It is only "un-locking" the 4-wheel drive and making it a 2 wheel drive. They say it is a lot easier to steer but I am skeptical.

Hey guys I talked to them at Hilifter. I have the locker on my 450s and asked if this would help. They said some but the way they said it made me think not much. Guess I'll set back and watch for awhile.

Everything will still be spinning no matter what they come out with (unless it is unlocking hubs like on trucks). The latest and greatest is the Detroit Locker(I have waited waaaayyyy to long for this)it is the best of both worlds, guaranteed traction and ease of steering.

all that it does is reduce stress on the front drive section by allowing the drive shaft to rotate freely.
in an open differential it will allow easier steering, the front wheels will be allowed to rotate somewhat independent of each other.
if there is a true locking rear differential for a quad, i know some people that would be very interested in testing it for another application... will it handle 70-80 hp?
