Yes on both accounts! On a safe note the car doing the jumping make sure it is only idling at jump time!

I believe if the battery goes dead it is a little safer for the electrical components to use the pull start. If you are capable of doing that as it can be tricky. Although it is not too difficult as my 16 yr old daughter can do it. Now that she knows the trick.

If you look around you can find a small light gauge wire set of jumper cables that does not take up too much room if you want to pack that sort of thing.

Pull recoil slowly past power stroke, then pull it hard. The damn thing will lengthen your arm if you don't, IT STOPS DEAD.. It will pull fairly easy when done right. I've did it too many times the wrong way until someone told me the secret. Why they don't have a decal on manual starter stating it?? it is a safety factor-can tear your arm shoulder or back up! Causes a lot of cussing also@!

Default I don't think you want too

I could be wrong but bear with me,since the motorcycles and atv's have a simple charging system you need to have the the car dead the reason is your charging system on the car puts out way more amps then you stator can handle, I blew 2 stators doing this with the car running, ask some techs it was explain to me this way, leave it dead and your only getting the 12 volts to your atv and the relay can stand this instead of 64 plus amps fron the car

I always have a pair of small jumper cables in my tool kit. 09 and up Sportsman's dont have a pull start option.
Guess they wanted to save a couple bucks and left it out.
