Default Vin Location on Sportsman 500

Just purchased a used 1998 Polaris 500 Sportsman. No Title of course. I can't make out the number on the frame rail due to scratches and just the age. Does anybody know where the Vin number might be at another location? Any help would be appreciated.

welcome to the forum. there used to be stickers on the front under the headlight area but i'm guessing that it''s long gone. most states don't require titles i didn't think.

Thanks for responding. Getting ready to order parts that needs replacing. Looked on line most of the model's that year are interchangeable, so i guess i'll just have to do the best i can. Called a local Polaris dealer, was told the vin was stamped only on the left side of the frame rail. Not very logical place you think with all the wear and tear from riding to have it stamped their. Oh well, Thanks again, Clay

You only need the year to order parts. On the Sportsman many parts are the same even with a 10 year spread. Your dealer wants the Vin # to get a part?

The person you bought it from should be able to go to the license bureau and for a few bucks get you a ownership .

No, never tried to order parts from dealer. But, i usually order parts from PartShark.com. You are right, most of the parts are interchangeable, but some are not. You order the wrong part and you'll have to pay for the return shipping and possibly a restocking fee, who knows. Clay
