2003 sportsman 500 speedometer issue.
#1
My wife will be getting herself a 2003 polaris sportsman 500 from some friends of ours for about $3500. First of all it needs a new rear brake line, it is broken. The speedo they say stopped working a short time ago. He also said he replaced the battery a short time ago. The lights work it drives ok but I did not try the 4 wheel drive. After reading some of the post on the forum I tried to diagnose why the speedo went out. I read that a shorted battery can cause the speedo to quit and water can be a factor. And also a Hall effect sensor I did try and look up this part for this year of machine and it's not any where on any parts list. I am assuming it is not on this machine. Could this also be just a loose wire? The machine runs good otherwise. I did also read on how to bypass some wires if it is the speedo cluster to make the 4 wheel drive work this would be ok if it will not blow out any thing else. We ride with a lots of people and go slow not worring about speed too much. as long as lights, 4 wheel drive, and it starts all are good were good. I've been reading this forum for years now. I am an avid atv rider got my wife into it big time. I ride a polaris sportsman 500 2008 so far its all good. If any one can give me some advise I would greatly appreciate everything you can tell me about this machine and the couple of issues with it .

the hall effect sensor in the dealer fiche is listed in the handlbar section. when it pops up look to the left side of the screen. if you do replace it ,don't lose that lil aluminum cap,it does not come with the wiring.

At that price it should be in like new condition, not that you asked about the price but still $3500, thats high. You might be looking at $1000 in new parts for everything to work.
As for the battery and speedo it could be just a corroded ground cable or battery terminal or old battery.

The machine has less than 1000 miles on it, Warn winch. You guys think this is priced too high??? I did'nt think I would find one in the shape its in for much less. What should this machine be priced at. An other mention it is very clean. You guys are making me wonder if I should even go ahead and buy this machine.
