New to me '96 Scrambler 400 4x4
#1
Hi guys havent been here in years lol.
I just traded my 03 trailboss 330 to a friend for his Scrambler. I see there are 2 different versions of the 400 scramblers. 95-97 and 98-02.
What are the differences and which one is more desirable?
Mine is kind of hoofed, but runs great and looks decent. Always wanted a scrambler (remember when they were new).
Just wondering if I should put a bunch of money into it or get the newer style.
I mainly just trail ride and mess around anymore, but love the 4wd. Thanks.

Biggest dif is the 98-2000 are shaft drive front, concentric rear drive and longer suspension.
The 96 has 3 chains to deal with but run just as good as the others.Remember that in 2001 and 2003 the only 400 Scramblers were 2x4 and in 2002 the 4x4 400 Scrambler was thte X model.

I see there seems to be a difference between motor performance parts i.e. 95-97 and 98-00, How come?
Which would be the model to build up?, which would be more suitable for racing?
How much more travel did the newer ones have?
The big picture for me is I have 4 sport quads I want to own, and would like to start out with the better of the 2 scramblers before I commit and put a bunch of money into "less desirable" one. Thanks! -Mike

The 98-up is best due to the shaft front drive. The dif in parts is the pipe mounts dif on the earlier ones but any 96-up motor can be made to make lots of HP.94-95 have a dif port set up.

Gotcha, sounds like I can live with the chain then. Will start fixing it up unless I find a clean 98' up. If your familiar with old quadracer 250s, I wanted to make sure I didnt have the 85-86 version of a scrambler 400. Thanks again.

Dont use Jap thinking when building this Polaris.Stay away from DG and FMF pipes go with Aaen,HPD,Hotseat,Dynoport or RcR.And clutch to the pipe you buy.

Ftw,
About your old trailboss 330..
I just traded my buddy the same quad for the scrambler, it looks like you made a change to the clutching, How did it affect performance? might have to pass this along to him as he might keep it for awhile. Thanks.

The clutch change got top speed close to 55mph and had tons of midrange power so it wouldnt power out on hills.
