Unhappy Is it a stator issue

Hi Guys,

I have an 04 Polaris 600 Twin. I has less than 800 miles on it(garage kept) and it ran great up until I put a winch on it. I put a Gorilla 3000Lb winch on it at the beginning of the year. Everything went fine and I only used it once or twice to help a neighbor move an od car around. I started to notice that every couple of weeks that my battery(new last lear) was all of a sudden showing a 50% or more loss when plugged in to the charger. I ran it every week or two araund the neighborhood to charge it and it would always crank up ok. Then a couple of months ago the discharging began to get worse. I could charge it up and it would hit around 75% on the meter and quit charging. I would leave it for a day and plug it in and it would hit 100% charge level. When I try to start her up after charging it used to start up and idle ok, now when she cranks up it takes a little throttle and when I put it into reverse it flat out dies. If I put it into drive (L or H) I can drive it. I also noticed that the speedo showed I was doing 30-40 at a stand still. Even when I was moving it would act crazy. I though it migh have be the Gorilla so I unhooked it...same results! Now on the speedo It shows stator. Anybody care to give me some pointers as to where I need to look first. I found the maintenance manual and just wanted to ask first so I dont end up chasing my tail. Thanks for the help.

The speed sensor can cause the problem with the speedo and dying in reverse.

Unhook it from the speedo and see what happens.

Default Thanks for the heads up!

I will start there and work my way back. I think I remember that it is on the front left wheel on the 600.?

Hi,
Don't give up on that battery being the culprit. I had a buddy of mine tear his 06 800 all apart and change the stator and have his bike down for a long time l;ooking for the problem when it was the battery itself all along. He had purchased a new battery and ran it a few times, went hunting and it left him in the bush. Thinking it was not the battery he looked everywhere else but there.

Just saying!

Talking It is fixed!!

Thanks for the heads up about the battery! I put an AGM batt in and it now works like a top! $90 is a lot better than $495 for a new stator. Whew!!
