Default sportsman 500 engine oil scavenge

Does anyone know the limits that you can tilt the engine aft before it can not scavenge oil, I am configuring this 500 HO in a different machine, and would like to erect it straight up ,,but that means when its on an incline it will be tilted even further past the vertical position, can I just had more oil to compensate for the pick-up being rotated so far up? or am I asking for a hydraulic lock in the bottom end by adding more oil?

Help?

Tim

I have flipped them on there back .the worst thing that can happen is some oil blow back into the air box from the crank vent hose.

That's just for a short time though!!
Running the engine like that (mounted) may be a whole different story.

I think by the time you climbed the tree the oil would be below the oil pump pickup screen!(depends on how tall the tree is!!!!) Kidding aside, the pickup is pretty low on the bottom of the case, but standing straight up for an extended time or having the motor mounted differently might cause some unwanted problems. If it was a wet sump engine, then you could probably climb trees all day long! Adding more oil in a dry sump engine such as the 500 wouldn't help as most of the oil is in the tank anyway. OPT
