04 500 HO cuts out under load

I suspect bad coil but I'm not sure the procedure to check and I am unemployed and way too broke to take it in to the dealer.

Can someone please help?

If it's cutting out under load the first thing I would check is Air and fuel supply. Carb need cleaned? Dirty fuel filter? Air filter?

Does it run any different with the airbox lid off? I had this happen to our SP400 and it was getting too much fuel. Ran fine with the airbox lid off. Happened when going up hills with a heavy rider and lots of gear. Otherwise ran fine. Re jetted the carb an now runs like a million bucks.
