Anyone help me out here? What were the engine offerings used in the Big Red and for what years? How do you identify the engines on the 3 wheeler? Would it say on the bike Big Red 200 or the like or were there only one engine offered per manufacture year. Was any one engine or model yearprefered over another?
Where are good places to fine used Big Reds?

Thanks for the help

Gary

The 85' Big Red 250 has ATC250ESF on the headstock. As for the engine I don't know without looking but to my knowledge the 250 was the only one produced with front and rear suspension and the 249 cc engine. If you look at any of the old brochure pics found on various 3-wheeler web sites you should be able to easily identify them. I've had one from new it's never been any trouble at all and it's had serious abuse. As for where to find one I don't know, I'm in the UK and you never see any advertised over here at all. Generaly trikes are rare as rockin' horse droppings over here. But get a good Big Red 250, I don't think you'll regret it!!

If I remember correctly, the 250 was offered from 85-87. Before that there was a 200 model from 82 or 83 through 84 w/ no rear suspension. The 250 versions are also shaft drive and the older ones are chain drive. You are MUCH better off looking until you get a 250. I've heard about the 200cc models having weak front suspensions.

To tell ya the truth I really haven't decided 100%. It's the same old story. I know the 4x4 will do the job and I can get one used but the amount you save buyin used isn't really worth the difference. It's hard for me to justify 6 or 7 thousand dollars. Now I can get a Big Red pretty reasonable but I'm still not totaly convinced it will do the job. I know I could get a Big Red try it and sell it for probably around the same price I paid for it. That may in fact be the way to go. I have ridded 4x4's but never even seen in person a Big Red. So I guess the answer is idono. The other problem is the Big Reds I have found are all to far away. Closest one was 5 hr. There was a guy that had one for sale in MS with a winch but when I got back to the add I couldn't find it. It was sold, removed or ran out of time.

check the classifieds section of 3wheeler.org...I posted info on one that was in the local paper here in MS. You can pretty much bet you'll get your money back out of a Big Red. As far as doing what a 4x4 will...it won't. However, with the right tires and skill (avoid the big mud pits instead of plowing through them) you can go just about anywhere they can. My 250sx pulled my 5,000 lb imperial around the front of my shop this past weekend. Of course, I wouldn't try it uphill or on a regular basis.

p.s. - I was wrong, the '84 200cc models did have shaft drive, but I'd still look for a 85+
