I am going to try a sensor today but is there any way to test the circuts tot he speedo so if i have to $$$$ a new speedo it won'r croak again when i install it .

You say the speedo needle...does it have a sensor or is it mechanical with a speedo cable? My Big Bear quit working and it was a matter of the speedo cable being broken...25 bucks later and it was fixed!

Its your speed sensor Polaris calls them "Hall Efects", there located by the front right brake rotor. Easy to change and this guys sell them for $40. (Part number 39.) OEM motorcycle and ATV parts from Honda, Yamaha & Polaris – Cycle Parts Warehouse
My has not worked for 3 years, only my Hourmeter and speedo's light works. I,m Just to lazy to care about a part like that I quess.LOL
Yes its wire operated not cable.

TLC I have a question for you since you seem to know very much about the 500`s and I`m still fairly new to them, now ask me about the old trail boss 250`s and I can tell you everything you want to know. On with my question when I got my 99 sportsman 500 in September I had to fix alot of things due to the old owner, 1 was I need to get a brake rotor because the old owner thought it would be ok to run it without front pads, the rotor was so badly bent it wrecked the hall effect sensor when I ordered the new rotor the dealer said it was the same on both sides and there was nothing special for the sensor pickup. Is this true? also my hour meter isn`t working I have a new hell sensor just haven`t had time to install it yet. I have read that the hour meter should still work without the sensor do you have any ideas as to why the hour meter isn`t working? the lights in the pod are working so im thinking there is power to it.
Thanks in advance Randy.

You defiantly have a different speed sensors, yours is Part Number
2201625 (replaces 4040081) and is $102! (part 40) OEM motorcycle and ATV parts from Honda, Yamaha & Polaris – Cycle Parts Warehouse So maybe unlike my $40 sensor 4010298 yours may control the hourmeter as well is my guess.
Yes both your Rotors on the front are the same rotor 5242935 . $41.
A good thing to do with the fiji motors is silicon the rope handle in place, water and dirt will work its way down into the rope hole and screw up your stator, pluse coil and bendix drive over time.
