Installing HID lights in 98 Sportsman.. heat question
#1
I've put HIDs in pretty much everything I own since they are so cheap now. I'm not happy with the stock light output. A standard 35W halogen H4 bulb puts out around 1100 lumens. A 35W HID puts out 3500 lumens, and a 55W puts out just over 5000 lumens. This means that these lights will be 3-5 times brighter than stock, probably more since it looks like the low beams are only 22 or 27W stock.
My 2 options are 35W or 55W HIDs. Everything else I have HIDs in are either glass, or a huge polycarbonate housing. The ATV housings are polycarbonate, and not so big. I'm worried that they won't dissipate heat and melt, or that the reflective material will delaminate.
Will the stock plastic housings withstand the heat from them? If not, does anyone make glass replacements? I'm assuming others have done a HID mod on theirs.
Also, it looks like it's a standard H4 bulb right now, I haven't looked to hard. Am I correct in assuming this? I need to know so I can get the correct adapter ring.
