Default 06 sportsman 700 questions

Hey everyone, I know this is the third thread I've started regarding this atv, but if I bring my old threads up from the dead, no one really pays attention and I'm kinda needing some quick answers.

Anyways, I bought this thing for $800 a couple months ago, and about $300 later, I finally got the thing out and drove it, and I'm really pretty impressed. Starts good, good power, totally owned a snowbank that I know my Honda wouldn't have went through, lol.

I have 3 things I'm wondering about.

1. When I rode it tonight it was about 50 degrees outside, I rode for about 10 minutes, not really revving high or anything, and the cooling fan came on. Is that normal or should I be flushing the cooling system?

2. I noticed both front axles don't stay in the diff. I can pull them in and out about 1 inch. I can shove them in all the way, and after I've turned the wheels they pull themselves back out. There is just enough left in to catch when its in AWD. Why would that be happening though?

3. I pulled the gear selecter case cover off to get the water out and grease it, and when I went to put it all back together, I lost the compression spring. Was that for some sort of safety feature? It didn't seem to affect it going in and out of gear or anything. Just wondering if its something I will need to fix or if I can just forget it.

1.Wouldn't hurt to change the coolant but not odd that the fan kicked on.

2.Axles shouldn't come that far out. There are circlips on them that should keep them in so you will need to take it apart at some point to make sure they aren't missing. Does it have a lift? If so, that may explain why they are coming out that far ecpecially if the circlips are missing or worn.

3.That spring was there for a reason so it would probably be best to replace it. Bikebandit.com is probably cheaper than the dealer.

Hope this helps!

make sure the radiator isn't plugged on either front and back and make sure the coolant level is where it is suppose to be. as mentioned it would not be uncommon for the fan to kick on as twins run hotter then singles and as long as your hot light doesn't come on and coolant spits out it's not overheating. +1 on the cv axles as mentioned. as far as the spring goes as i looked real quick on the parts break down and not sure where you mean, but couldn't see a spring any where. but maybe i wasn't checking the part you took apart.

In the parts diagrams under the gearcase section, the spring is part #24, it is what pushes the pawl detent up to hook on the star detent. I think it is a park safety sort of thing. I will eventually replace the spring, I just would rather wait until I need several parts, since shipping is the same either way.

This thing is not lifted, and it doesn't look like it has ever been. So I'm guessing the circlips must be gone or too worn to matter anymore.

I will try and check the radiator a little more, but I just wanted to make sure it wasn't uncommon for the fan to kick on that quickly.

My '03 600 fan runs a lot too. Even in the winter it is not uncommon to have it running. My cooling system is properly maintained and it still runs alot. I wiould doulbe check the back side of the raditor to make sure all the fins are clean. It is amazing how much crud gets lodged in the radiator.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are no clips on the axles. Previous owner may have forgotten to put them back on or removed them to make axle removal easier(not a good idea btw). If they pull right out when you remove the axles double check in the diff splines for the clips just to be sure they aren't floating around in there.

ok after i looked again now i see it(i swear my eyes are going lol)but i would say you would need it to maybe keep pressure on the shifter so it wouldn't fall out of any gear?? hard to tell looking at the picture but it doesn't seem to be an indent spring. arent all the gears in a striaght row w/ park?

Well - first off I would check the VIN #. $800 = obviously stolen. I had an 06' stolen out of my driveway last year - not accusing at all, but awful cheap for a Polaris 700. I need the # of your seller for sure ;-) Excellent Buy...GoodLuck!

Lol, not stolen I have the title in my hand and got it from a Honda dealer. They didn't want to mess with it, plus it has 9100 miles and 900 hours on it.

I am not sure what that spring does, but when I drove it the other night, it sure seemed to drive just the way it was supposed to. A little hard to go from High to Reverse after it warmed up though.

Yeah, those clips must not be there. I had better not drive anymore until I get that fixed, I don't want to strip the ends of the splines on those axles.
