Default Can starter on SP 500 HO be safely removed without removing clutch assy

Can the starter be removed from a 2005 SP 500 HO without removing the clutch assembly?

I've found that some say yes, and others say no.

please give details if possible.

Thanks

Yes, it's tight but can be done. Remove battery connections from starter and loosen the two bolts holding the starter in place. The top bolt will just slide out, then you'll have to rotate the starter motor 180 degrees so the bottom bolt is now on top to remove it. It can be a pain but it's better than tearing off the clutch assembly. IMO

I don't know how you can rotate the starter with the second bolt still in. I have removed the starter before as stated above, However you must loosen the second bolt completely and then remove or rotate the starter with the bolt not completely out. Like they say above it can be done and gets easier with practise. When I put my starter back on I used some good RV Silcon around the Oring and then slid it in place. I have had no more water infultration to my recoil housing since.
good luck

checked with the dealer today and they want $300 for the polaris starter and 2 hrs @ $75 per/hour to do the job for me.

I see two replacement starters online for around $100 and another for $38 both from DBelectric. The more expensive one is a gold starter and the less expensive looks more like whats in the atv now, just metal.

other than the price and color is there a difference? and which do i need for a 06 sportsmen 500 HO?

Thanks

Do the work yourself. It's a great way to learn more about what you bought and drive and also helps make you keep up on the maintanance more often.

LOL! Stop drinking before you get online! Just because I do it doesn't mean you should as well.
