1995 Polaris Sport 400
#1
Hey Everyone, i'm new to the site and i have a few questions. I just recently bought a 95 Polaris Sport 400, liquid-cooled 2-stroke, in good condition still with the stock tires for $2000. I was wondering if there is anything that i should look for that might be wrong and i was wondering if i got ripped off from the dealer. One more thing, what is your opinion on how this machine performs, handles and why did they discontinue this model. Thanks for your time, this info would be very helpful.

They didn't exactly discontinue the model. It has evolved. I believe it went from the GenII plastic to the GenIII. (Scrambler) Now it's just called the Scrambler 400 2x4. I think you'll be happy with that machine. I had a 94 400L that used the same engine and it was great. Would never had sold it, except I replaced it with a BigBoss 6x6 and have since added a 97 Scrambler to the mix. Keep up with the minor preventive maintenance and it should be a good ride for you.

Ya they didnt discontinue the model they just made it the 400 scrambler... I just bought a 98 400 sport and i love it... It is not the best quad in the snow but on the trails and hill climbs you cant beat it...So i think you will be very pleased with yours.

Sport95,
I am like you, I bought a used '96 Scrambler for $2200. I got it cheap cuz it had a blown tranny. I did all the repair work myself, and it saved me lots of money. Now I am very familar with my machine. I have restored it to almost new condition.
Beings that it has the OEM tires (surprising) that does not mean it is in perfect condition. Look for these wear items.
1. Brake pads-Polaris pads are not long lasting.
2. Sprocket and chain wear.
3. Steering bushing wear-in other words, your steering feels loose. Go with an aftermarket lower steering post bushing, much better then stock.
4. Tie rod ends. Update to the new style.
5. Make sure all grease zerks work.
6. Change tranny oil.
7. Blow out radiator, always full of sand!
These are just some suggestions of things to look for and do after buying a used quad. I would say you got a good deal on your Sport. Enjoy riding it!
'96 Scrambler w/K&N filter & Boyesen Power Reeds
Soon to have RCR Stage 1 Kit.
