Pre 97 they still made the 400 2 stroke sportsman which is "essentially" the same as the your 400 xplorer besides body style and racks. Same motor and 3 chain system.

They started to make the 500 sportsmans 4 stroke in 96. The body style on your 95 xplorer is the same style body on that 500 sportsman up till about 02-03...Lots of body parts/plastic are interchangable if need be. What's different between your 95 400 xplorer and the sportsman 500 up till 02. Your motor is a 400 2 stroke, has 3 chains, rear swing arm. The sportsman 500 is a 4 stroke and Independant rear suspension and doesn't use any drive chains.

As far as the 3 chain system and when they stopped using it...depends what machine. They still used it on the 400 xplorer till 2000. Other machines,sportsman(96), scrambler(99).

I think my years are right...if not someone correct might correct me.

It's even enough for my "experienced" butt...they're quick machines as is! But, like said...if you want to pep it up,lots of stuff you could do. Mine's pretty stock besides lift/tires. On trail rides we swap machines once in a while...guys like to get on the 400's...I always want mine back! Nice thing about these machines...they're easy to work on if you need to.
