I've heard from others that these starters can be noisy at start-up, so have never stressed over mine being that way. I have ridden a few others identical to mine and they were much quieter at start-up. I'm looking to sell my ATV, and want to get everything right to maximize my dollars. Can anyone confirm or deny this, and do I need to replace the starter or something else?

 

Is it the starter or the starter bendix making noise? When starting "blip" the throttle right as it starts,will kick bendix back faster. The 500 's do hang up more than the other machines. You can remove recoil and grease bendix and see if it helps. Plus can clean starter up if its the problem and replace brush kit. OPT

 

i just bought a 2011 500 ho for the wife and it also has a noisy starter,pretty sure they all have that.

 

Yeah, my wife's 2000 500 is loud as well. It makes you cringe when starting the damn thing lol. I replaced the recoil (internals), starter and bendix (because they needed it) and it's still just as loud as when we first bought it.
