hello,my brake fluid is low on my 2007 polaris 500,can i use dot 3 brake fluid from autoparts store or must i use only polaris brake fluid.

 

unless you have a leak somewhere you might want to take a look at your brake pads. If they're not worn to where they need to be replaced then you can use pretty much any Dot3 or the dot3 and Dot4 compatible. I use advanced auto's brand and I haven't had any problems with it at all. For most (maybe all??) of polaris's fluids there is a less expensive alternative that will substitute for their brand and will work just as well with a little less pain in the wallet.

 

Just upgrade to any brand dot 4,better on seals than dot 3,as mentioned will mix with existing fluid,BUT best to flush system. I never used dot 3 after dot 4 came out. OPT

better off not mixing if if you can. i think polaris used dot 4 didn't they opt?

 

Early machines used dot 3,but dot 4 is compatible and can mix with dot 3,BUT I always flushed systems especially when doing brake jobs and used Dot 4. Dot 5 is silicone based and CAN'T be mixed OR used in systems calling for dot 3 or 4\(will eat the lines up). Dot 5.1 is the newest fluid,but is glycol based not silicone based like dot 5!! Dot 5.1 just has a higher boiling point than dot 3 or 4,BUT can be used in place of either!! Confusing I know,but we had to contend with this at the shop along with MINERAL oil recommended on KTM hydraulic clutch systems! My opinion just stay with Dot4. Dot4.1 costs more and only recommended for racing or high heat applications. OPT

 

On last line meant to say Dot5.1 NOT Dot 4.1!!! I still get confused over this too! OPT

dot 3 or 4 be fine,..that sillycon 5.1 adsorbs water easy an give a real spongy peddle even when new,....dot 5.1 was designed for restored cars thats not drivein often....an confusing it is!
