Default 99 SP500 Voltage Spike Blowed Bulbs

Ok,I was riding in my yard this evening stopped and put it in N to check my mail and noticed the neutral light flickering and looked at the headlight for a split second and it was super bright prior to blowing. It was almost like the battery was disconnected or the system had a huge overcharging spike?? Checked the battery leads all were ok as well as the grounds and voltage regulator wiring.I restarted it and all seems to be fine and it is not overcharging.I'm thinking it's the voltage regulator even though all seems fine now but hate to replace headlight/tail light for this spike to occur again.Any tips? Thanks

Have the battery load tested to eliminate this as a problem(dead cell or weak battery would allow the voltage from the regulator/rectifier to by pass the battery and out the areas of weakest resistance first, usually the bulbs) if battery checks out ok, I'd go after the regulator/rectifier as they can fail by either no charging at all,low charging back to the battery,or even jump up to 16 to 18 volts spike voltage. I would replace it if battery and all connections were good. OPT

OPT,You know I think you hit this one dead on,two months ago my battery went totally dead which baffled me considering it was fine the prior day,so I charged it and added some distilled water to the low cells and reinstalled it.It has started fine since the charge but I will do a load test and go from there. Thanks
