Default Where the heck is my tranny drain plug???

Man I feel like such a newbie...

I have a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700.
I drained and filled my front diff, rear diff, engine oil.
Changed the spark flug, airfilter, and...

Then I met my match...

I pulled the tranny fill plug....no brainer.
Can't find the drain plug!
I found another thread on this forum of a guy who had the same problem.
He said he found it through a rectangular hole in the skid plate, it was 7/16 and horizontal rather than pointing down.
I pulled the plug he described and only a little oil dribbles out and stops.
I then checked the oil level in the fill plug and it is to the bottom of the threads just like the service manual says so it is still full...
So that CAN'T be the right drain plug!

Where the heck is the plug...
Can somebody PLEASE help me out...
A picture would be best if possible...

Thank you in advance for any help!

The 7/16" bolt IS the drain plug at the front of the transmission and is horizontal! If oil only dribbled out, then you have some shavings, etc stopping the hole! Look at Pure Polaris Parts online for the break down of the transmission.(click on "browse") Shows the little plug(will have a magnet tip) and washer at the front at the bottom of the case. PLUS welcome to the forums! OPT

Thank you for the quick response!

If I go to Polaris Parts Online, what section is it under?
I looked earlier but couldnt find it under:
Gearcase, Transmission Mount...

None of the other sections look like they make sense.
Am I missing something?
There i no Transmission section.

Thanks.

Just Google Pure Polaris Parts online and scan down the results page until you see "browse". Click on this and you can pick your machine and year and will show the "gear case" items #51 and #52.
You might want to "bookmark" this parts catalog into your favorites. OPT
PLUS under Cycle Parts Warehouse is another link that shows the same items and also prices(cheapest I've found so far on oem parts)

Thank you so much for the help.

I found the diagram.

If I read the diagram right, the drain plug points right and left if you are sitting on the ATV, is this right??

The plug I took off the ATV faces front to back when you are sitting on the ATV.

Small plug faces toward the FRONT as you are sitting on the machine! Lower right side of the case (in between the case bolts!) Its the ONLY 7/16" bolt on the gear case! OPT

Thanks again.

So the hole just must be clogged up with sludge or metal fillings.

I am planning on using some copper wire and feeding it into the hole to try to get the oil flowing.

If you have a better idea, please let me know.

Thanks

Sounds good. Only other way I can think of is to use an old towel, wrap around an air blower in fill hole and give it a shot or two. Might just make a mess,BUT would probably open it quickly!! OPT

All done.

I fished arond the drain hole with some wire, felt some resistance, (prolly sludge) and then the oil started shooting out.

I then hooked up the air compressor and gave it a blow through for good measure.

Just a sidenote...you see a bunch of posts on here about dealerships making mistakes...

All my drain bolts were SEVERELY overtightened. (Font diff, rear diff, oil, tranny)

All my fluid levels were filled WAY too high except for the oil.
The front and rear diff were filled to the level of the fill hole rather than backed down to the manual's specs.
The tranny was filled just below the fill hole (not the 1 5/8 gap that the manual calls for.)

Unbelievable...you would think the dealership would follow the specs in the service mauals???

Anyways...thanks again OPT, I really appreciate the help.
