I have a 96 xplorer 300 (w969130) that has issues with gear selector. The shifter moves and engages High/Low and Reverse OK but the indicator light for reverse is lite up no matter what position the shifter is in. The neutral light does not lite up when shifter is in neutral.

If I wiggle the 4 wires coming out of the gear selector I can make the reverse light act correctly but still never get the netural light to work. I looked at wires going from selector to panel and from panel to indicator lights on handle bar and all look OK. Does this sound like a short in a wire somewhere or could it be issue with gear selector switch? Is the gear selector switch something that is rebuildable or am I better off just getting replacement gear selector? There is some play in the gear selector but this is my first ATV so not sure what is normal. It has 2900 miles on it.Thanks for any help

 

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you need to replace the gear selector switch in the shift box. Part #3233215. This was a common problem on this shift box (along with the shift box itself when the internal parts wear out) Later models had the gear selector on the transmission where it should have been in the first place.
