Default 400 trailblazer transmission repair

Ok I finally got around to taking my POPPING trans out and apart. I pulled the shift shaft and the gear selector piece that moves it back and forth and they both look great. I can still see the machining marks(looks like crosshatching) on the machined part of it. Absolutely no wear on either of those two. The chain has over a 1/2" of movement between the small and large gears and there are several stiff links in it too. There appears to be almost no wear on the large or small gear. I've never seen one new to compare it to but, there are no nicks or major scratches on either of them. I can only see where the chain rides on the teeth and can't feel any wear on them on any of the teeth. Should I replace either or both of the sprockets also?

As long as the high/reverse slider gear or small main drive gear(one the chain rides on along with the larger final drive gear) don't have any rounded ,worn engagement dogs, plus the bearings all feel smooth, then sounds like all you need to replace is the chain and seals. Several times this is all I've had to replace in gear cases. You'll notice a big difference on slack with the new chain! It will be a lot tighter. OPT

Thanks OPT! I had to go back and lookup what you told me a few weeks ago as far as what to look for But all of that looks fine to me... even the side teeth that lock into the engagement dog on both gears look good and not rounded or chipped. WHAT A RELIEF! I was looking up the prices on all of the parts and was not liking the $300+ in parts i could have needed... but a $34 chain sounds so much better! And as ALWAYS, Thanks again OPT!

Ok so I got my chain and seals in today and am going to replace the parts tomorrow. I have one question though. On the output shaft, the only seal it shows is a triple lip seal. I looked at mine and maybe there is one of these seals behind it but there is a large rubber seal like material coming out of the case. Is this something I need to make sure I don't tear up or could it somehow be the triple lip seal swollen and protruding from the seal? I didn't look outwards through that side of the case as I just planned on changing all the seals and don't know what it could be

Think this is just to help isolate any oil seepage to the clutches. Just a piece of foam. OPT

Oops! I typed up a reply to my last post and I guess either I forgot to hit submit or it never went through... You are right OPT it's just a piece of foam, but from the best I can tell it seals the back of the clutch cover to the transmission for water, oil, etc. I thought I posted it but never checked it... You were very much right tho, there was MUCH less slop in the new chain and the new one was actually flexable... The old one(tho ALWAYS run in agl) was all but one solid piece once I got it out. I could move the individual links back and forth on their pins but I could straighten it out and hold it from one end and it would BARELY sag.... But she's doing much better now THANKS AGAIN OPT!
