Default STARTER question

My elderly father has an old 2-stroke Polaris ATV that is driving us crazy. . It has electric start. With a brand new battery fully charged it will turn over fast but will not fire about 75% of the time.

HOWEVER, if we hook the battery charger to it, it will start immediately, every time.

It doesn't seem like it cranks any faster with charger attached, but apparently it needs just a little more current to start.

We have replaced the battery, coil, solenoid, and positive cable from battery to solenoid and positive cable from solenoid to starter. The starter was just rebuilt.

The only thing that I can think to try next is to replace ground cables. Maybe even run the negative cable directly from the battery to the engine????

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I just want Dad to be able to ride again.

Thanks, Kev

Welcome! The battery ground wire goes to the engine(behind the clutches) and you already have a frame ground at the top rear motor mount to the engine, check that the eyelet hasn't broken. Also might help if you remove the recoil cover and clean up the flywheel, even better if you can pull the flywheel and clean the stator coils up with emory cloth. Could help on the starting problem.
