I have a 2007 Arctic Cat 650 TRV. This is the oil I got from the dealership for my last oil change http://store.arcticcat.com/product/449428/1436-435/_/ACX_Synthetic_Oil,_Gallon . The dealership wants $44 for a gallon now so I’m wondering if you guys can recommend some decent oil that doesn’t cost a fortune that I can get online or preferably from an auto parts store. I did a google and ATV Connection search and it looks like I probably need a wet clutch certified oil but my owners manual recommends SAE 5W 30 which has me kind of confused.

I had the same concern chasing down oil for my 2012 brute force and I went to an auto parts store and they matched my needs perfectly... The only oil they did not have was the oil for the rear of the brute which is for the wet brake system that kawasaki employs. In that case since it was such a small amount I bougt it from the dealer...

Synthetic oil is better then Conventional oil but will cost more. All motorcycle/ATV grade oils synthetic or otherwise are made for wet clutches.
Since most all ATVs are have CVT trannies and have no wet clutches anyways even thats not a big deal.

There is lots of aftermarket oils to chose from out there. Actually $44 for a gallon does not sound to bad for "Full Synthetic" since thats enough for two oil changes.
Also many people do not know Synthethic oil and conventional can be mixed . I use Amsoil Full synthetic and its stated on the lable "For wet clutches" and can be mixed with conventional oil.

Not sure why the recommend 5w-30 thats a colder weather oil. Most manuals have a chart where you pick your oil weight for your climate condition. Thats why I like 0w-40 it covers the coldest days or hotest.

 

Rotella T6 5W-40, $21 for a gallon jug at Walmart. Plus they have Purolator filters for $3.

 

Thanks for the help. I was mainly worried my ATV needed some very spacific oil but it sounds like one of my local auto parts places can take care of me.

 

Just make sure that whatever oil u find it's "wet clutch compatable" somewhere on the label.
Most regular motor oil has some form of friction modifyer....u don't want that.

Personally I use AMSOIL 0w40 full synthetic in the engine ($13 per qt) and a K&N filter ($12) in my '08 650 TRV. Lasts me all yr.

I also use AC's ACX 4qt kit for the wifey's 550, and the boy's 250.

 

Is there even a wet clutch to worry about in a 650 TRV? I thought wet clutches are only in the foot shift type of ATVs.

 

Nope, no wet clutch in ATVs that have a CVT so a wet clutch compatible oil is not needed. However, the Rotella T6 does carry JASO MA rating, so it is wet clutch compatible.

 

X2 on the Amsoil, a little spendy UP FRONT, but lasts allot longer. I use it in everything I own
