Default Adding turf mode to a Value line Sportsman - Possible?

Is this as easy an addition as on the XP? Do not want a two up, but would love to be able to unlock my rear diff. I know the two up Values have it, so should be a direct rear diff swap? Or is there a gear ratio difference between the two?

Your talking apples to oranges here as your Sportsman 400 has the gear case and drive system as a complete unit versus a separate gear case and rear differential atv.. OPT

The 2up Value sportsmans have turf mode. I will hsve to look and see if merely a diff change, and wiring the switch will do it.

If I remember right my 2006 Sportsman X2 500 with Turf Mode had a rear differential and transmission that were one piece where the regular models had a seperate differential and transmission. I had to replace it after dropping too fast off of a drop off and jarring something loose in the unit. Jarred my teeth too. So, it would be a huge job in my mind. Just my own thoughts.

no- it's not an "easy" thing to do- aside from what has already been mentioned above- the xp is a totally different machine than a regular sportsman- drive train, suspension and all. It's not only mechanically different- it's also electronically different.
Not worth the time & money. Why are you so eager to have turf-mode?

Doing a boat load of road riding, I see no benefit of having a locked diff for riding on asphalt. Should be standard on all models, not just the X2 atv's.

It is nice on pavement compared to a locked rear. A lot less tire scrub. And a lot less turf damage on grass. I'm just thinking it would be so expensive that you might end up paying for 1/2 of an X2. Maybe an exaggeration.

Since the spring of 2008 I have put over 18,000 miles or 30,000 km on my two atv's . A rough estimate would be 75% of that being on roads and many of those roads are paved . Not once did I ever wish I had tuff mode it never crossed my mind , totally not needed . You must ride a lot more than me on roads if you think you need it , how many km's or miles you doing a year . I'v done so far this year almost 4500 miles or 7200 km . You can't get to Tim Hortons without going on the roads

I suspect your not wanting Turf mode comes from not experiencing it. I have it on my 2011 850 X2 and added to my 2012 550XP. It transformed the 550 - so much more rider friendly.

On the 550 I can leave it in 4WD -AND- Turf mode on (unlocked) at the same time. (cant do that on the X2). That is a great combination for 90% of my riding. Plenty of traction including steep climbs with loose gravel - yet easy, tight turns on the technical trails I typically ride.

On pavement, there is no contest. That is why virtually every turf mode owner I have heard from would never "go back".

Was it pretty simple to add on the 550?
