Default 2000 sportsman 500 DEAD. HELP.

new project just picked up.
2000 sportsman 500
absolutely nothing happens when I turn the key. there is no start button on the left handle bar so im thinking it turns on with the key.
I checked all wires on the CDI and reconnected some wires.
jumped the starter and got good compression. I also bridged the starter solenoid and engine turned.
New ignition switch/key
changed oil
new spark plug
new battery
what else should i check? how do i know is the cdi that needs replacement over the coil, or other things? any way to test that?
are there any wires that absolutely need to be plugged in for the atv to start? there are some wires e.g. 12v outlet wires, ground for the winch etc...
i really dont want to just start buying up parts and replace them..
any help would be appreciated it. thanks.

Welcome! You've got most of what you need to check the electrical out on the schematic that you posted!! Look at the top right hand corner, shows the pulse(trigger) coil, stator specs along with the coil specs!. If you have no spark and these ohm out ok, then possibly you could have a cdi problem. Plus cleaning the pulse coil and stator area if you haven't done so could be needed.Just pull the recoil cover and you will see pretty quick if its dirty! Looks like a lot of corrosion and rust on electrical contacts, especially the solenoid, that need to be cleaned up,checked out along with tidying up the wires, cdi should have a bracket for it to mount instead of lying on top of the radiator, plus check for any shorts/breaks in the wiring harness.Plus the little square module is the circuit breaker, check that it has power to each side and needs to be sealed up.(originally in a plastic sealed pouch) Projects can be fun or a lot of work OR both.Plus look here for list of parts and break down on your model. http://parts.polarisind.com/Browse/Browse.asp P.S. push UP on the red emergency kill switch while in the middle position. I think this year model had the start button incorporated into this switch. OPT

btw if that little square module (circuit breaker) is not working would that be the reason why i get no lights when i turn the key to the on position? and why it doesnt turn or start?

Yes the circuit breaker if bad can stop power from getting to the front of the atv (lights, ignition switch, etc.OR the bulbs can be simply burnt out.) This can happen when the atv is run with a dead battery and the lights are turned on,can pop out from the surge from the reg/rectifier.This atv can recoil start with a dead battery. If after you have a good battery installed and you don't have power through the circuit breaker ,you can replace it at any good auto supply. It's a 20 amp resetting breaker. OPT
