96 sportsman 400 clutch cover replacement???
When you get tired of messing with the brackets, replacement updated cover(#5433540) is $74.17 at Cycle Parts Warehouse!
Sometimes the brackets work,a lot of times the noise just keeps coming back as the cover distorts even more and you have to readjust brackets again OPT

Can I just change the outer section with the updated one or do I have to replace inner and outer?

If the cover is warped and hitting the front clutch(like most would do) and moving the small bracket at the bottom out or in doesn't help with the noise,you can just replace with the updated cover only.The backing plate is usually ok. I changed plenty of these soft warped covers,some had holes worn through em!! #5433542 replacement cover ain't cheap! Its'$87 at Cycle Parts Warehouse. You might Google around on this part number to see if you can get a better price. OPT
