Sorry, but 90 pounds compression sounds like the problem.Anything below 115-120 psi is on the low side as far as compression goes. Probably needs at least a new top end, plus I wouldn't overlook crank seals. Have the cylinder measured and bore to the next size over to clean up the bore.Plus it must have NO up and down play on the rod(side to side play is ok) or the crank shaft would have to have a new rod kit and bearings.

Default 250 problem

thanks for your reply. i was hoping to get your opinion. you sound like you really know. i was under the impression that 90 was enough. but ok. i have reasonable mech knowledge but not havent messed with 2 stroke for years. can i change both crank seals with out splitting cases. i understand about the rest as i have most recentlly done alot of diesel work. gonna get started tomorrow. again thanks for the info.

Not necessary to split the cases to replace the crank seals, but you have to pull the drive clutch and on the other side the flywheel and stator plate to get to them.

Moved this over to the Polaris forum so others can benefit from OPT's advice if they're having the same problem.

Default clutch case leak

Could be the engine to backing plate seal is damaged allowing water in.Usually the case if any water puddle affects it.Either that or the clutch cover seal or even possible the air exhaust duct rubber connectors are split allowing water in that way.Item #26 is the engine seal.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

If it's the seal and you're talking about "rigging it",then no it needs to be replaced.Usually they get damaged by sticks and branches that punch holes in them.Silicone patching doesn't help that much, plus if you're that far just replace the seal. Same thing for the clutch cover seal or clutch cover intake/exhaust rubber connections. They just need to be replaced f damaged. If it's the seal the drive clutch has to be pulled to get to it and takes a puller.Or you can take the dimensions of the puller 3/4" x 16 pitch and see if you can get a long enough bolt at a hardware store.
