Default top strut nut

Hi, i need to remove the strut on my 95 trail boss 250. Everything is unbolted except for the nut on the top of the strut. I have gotten a wrench on it but when I turn it, so does the spring and the strut. Any back yard mechanic tips or tricks?

well an older unit like that won't have the hex to hold the shock shaft. But there should be something above the nut to grip with a crescent wrench or vice grips.

Just use a large pair of vicegrips with a piece of rubber to keep from scarring the shaft and grip the strut shaft between the spring close to the top. When you turn the nut, the vicegrips will lock up against the frame tube to where you can then loosen the nut. This is how I removed all of them when I didn't have clearance to get an impact on the nut.

Thank you, I will give this a try as soon as I get the chance.
